TECHNOLOGY: BOON OR CURSE
Modern world is technical world. Human has developed so much and there are so many new things being introduced to world every day. Things now are totally different from what these used to be a few decades away. We have landed on moon and moving farther in space day by day. We know what’s deep inside earth and what’s up there in sky. There’s no field where we don’t use modern technology. It has made our lives so easier. Everything seems to be available and approachable. Human, in one sense, is the master of life on earth. We are mending the mother nature in the way we want. In the world today, people cannot live without technologies such as televisions, mobile phones, computers and others. These technologies have slowly taken an essential part in people’s day-to-day lives and being without them would be unimaginable for some of us. From seeing what time a movie starts, ordering a pizza, and paying your bills the possibilities for technology are endless. Despite from the advantages, it has come with some cons as well. But the advantages overweigh the cons. Through this article, I’m going to argue about the benefits the technology has provided us with.
Technical developments have made the labor works easier. The work which require ten workers can now easily be done by one machine and one operator. Also, it saves a lot of time. Everything seems to be fast forwarded as compare to past. A three-story house is ready to be moved in within four to six months of beginning. This not only saves time but also saves the cost and increases profits. Because of introduction of technology in the process of producing goods, there has been tremendous increase in the industrial output. The automation of industries processes has resulted in processing tasks effectively and efficiently. Large industries make good use of engineering technology for large scale production of goods. Technology has positively impacted business activities involving manufacturing, selling, marketing, distribution, recording, etc. Modern technology and equipments has helped the optimal use natural resources. For example, advancements in irrigation technologies have made it easier to use water resources properly. Hydro power plants, thermal power plants and nuclear power plants uses natural resources to generate power to operate these equipments. So, on a whole, technology has benefited the industrial sector a lot.
The lives nowadays are more comforting because of the invention scientists have made. All the works we need to do can be done in blinks. Every household chore, now, can be done without in hardwork. We have dishwashers, washing machines, irons, microwaves, etc. to do the work which took a lot of hard work and time. Also, now, we have air conditioners, heaters, ccolers, etc. and one doesnot have to fight the extremes of weather. It’s hot inside buildings in freezing winter and cold in burning sun. Travelling is the other field, technology benefitted. There was a time when people used to cover distances on foot. It took several days to go to some distant place. But now through developments in technology, we can go from one corner of world to other in a matter of few hours. Due to lack of transportation the messages took a lot of time to travel. Everyone remembers studying pigeons used as messengers in history classes. But nowadays, these pigeons are replaced by mobile phones. Also, the things like parcels can be delivered between nations within few days.
Technology’s best gift has to be internet, without any second thoughts. One can find information on almost anything on internet. It has helped students, teachers, scholars, authors, everyone. One doesn’t know something, first thing they usually think today is o google it. Social media is the other aspect of internet. We can connect to people all around the world by sitting in our rooms. Video calling has made it really easy for people living away from homes to stay connected to their family. One can see his close ones every day, whenever he wants. Communication has improved not only on internet but also through print media, T.V.s and radios. One message can be delivered to a large number of people, simultaneously.
Food industry has grown a lot due to technical advancements. Modern irrigation technologies have made it possible to even cultivate on lands considered barren. Modern cultivation equipments and machines like tractors have increased the crop outfit by a great extent. Also, due to food production technologies, the wastage of food has decreased. Now, we have technologies like cold stores to store the food for long periods of time and most of the food can be processed into consumable products easily (Oduro, 2016). For example, the strawberries produced in Canada can be processed into jams, or frozen, made into smoothies etc. and exported nations where these are not produced. It gives a variety in diet and revenue to the exporter. Also, technologies in healthcare have made a healthier society. Life expectancy has increased and infant and maternal mortility has decreased. Health issues like heart problems, kidney failures, or life-threatening diseases, are now curable. Vaccinations for diseases like tuberculosis, small pox, etc. are now available.
As everything that exists in nature, technology has the other side of coin too. Too much indulgence in social media can cut a person from real world. Children these days are not having physical contact with outer world and the virtual world is all that’s important (Hertlin &Ancheta, 2014). One doesn’t know who’s sitting on other end in a conversation and sometimes this ignorance has led to increase in cyber-crimes. Machines are replacing human workers at work places, increasing the unemployment. Also, the increased use of these machines has led to increase in pollution. Too much use of technology has resulted in an increase in waste products into the environment. This has caused pollution. The discharge of industrial wastes into the environment diminishes the quality of soil, water, air, etc. The vehicle emission is among major causes of air pollution. Excessive use of pesticides in farming has caused soil erosion.
Technology, beyond doubt, has eased out human life and it is doing it easier every passing day. it has proven to be a boon to society, business and culture. But it has its cons. But it depends on the user, whether he let himself exposed to pros or cons. Excess of everything is bad. Using internet for limited times and limited use, obtaining information from reliable resources and talking to only known people decreases the chances of any kind of cyber-crimes. Using better forms of energy like solar energy helps decreasing the amount of waste produced by machines and lowers the levels of pollution. So, in nutshell it relies in the hands of user, what he wants from technology. Nuclear power can operate all our household equipments and industrial machines to produce goods. And, same nuclear power can destroy generations if used as weapon against someone. It’s our wish, what we want to let happen. After all, human is the master here.
