Polyurethane Glues
Polyurethane glue is a type of adhesive that can be used on porous or non-porous materials. It is also called PU or PUR glue. It is a multi-purpose and versatile adhesive that is suitable to bond a range of materials such as wood, metal, plastics, foam and stone. It is particularly suitable as wood glue. You must check the manufacturer advice on whether this glue is suitable for your application and the materials involved.
• Polyurethane glue forms a very strong bond. However, it has high viscosity and a great level of elasticity. It can stretch and elongate before splintering and breaking. It does not become brittle with age.
• When polyurethane glue dries it becomes waterproof. It also has some UV resistance enhances its life-span.
• Polyurethane glue expands slightly as it dries and sets. This means that it has some gap filling properties and can be used both indoors and outdoors.
• Polyurethane glue is available in tubes, tins, cartridges, packages and more.
• It needs moisture in order to set, which means that you can still apply this glue and it will set in wet conditions.
• Once the glue has cured it is completely safe, even food safe.
• The adhesive is available in a range of different colours such as black, white or clear. So there is a glue to suit every application.
• In storage, polyurethane glue typically has a short life span, normally around a year. This adhesive reacts to moisture in the air, so if a cap is left off a tube or an opened tin of glue is exposed to air for a long time, the glue may cure and harden.
• Some polyurethane adhesives create a foam as they cure, which can weaken the overall strength of the bond. The items that you are bonding together should be clamped firmly into place while the glue cures and sets.
• Some PU glue releases off-gas, so it is recommended that you wear suitable PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) while using this glue. It can cause irritation if it comes into contact with skin, so gloves are recommended when applying the glue.
How long does it take to dry?
The length of time for polyurethane to cure and set varies by manufacturer and application. The curing time can vary from as little as 15 minutes up to 48 hours. It can then take a few hours to set.
