“About half of Malaysian citizens are at least overweight or obese,” previous Malaysian Health Minister Dr S. Subramaniam was reported saying in 2016. “That’s a figure that is too high.” Malaysia has been coined as the leading country in Southeast Asia with the highest obesity population at 44.2%, and the percentage keeps increasing with time. Recently, the increasing rate of overweight children and adults have aroused people’s concern. Are those endless plates of nasi lemak and Maggi mee goreng to blame? Or do we also have our sedentary lifestyles and non-existent exercise routines to factor in ? The number of obese people keeps rising as time goes. And the diseases accompanied with obesity have already stood out, such as diabetes, heart diseases and so on. A question that are keep swirling in my mind is what are the cause and effect of obesity. This essay will be examine the cause and effect of obesity.
Everything has its seed, it can be said without fear and contradiction that increasing of obesity rate is cause by our sedentary lifestyles . This is due to the reason that , Many people have jobs that involve sitting at a desk for most of the day and including student. They also rely on their cars, rather than walking or cycling. For relaxation, many people tend to watch TV, browse the internet or play computer games, and rarely take regular exercise. Back in the 80s and 90s, kids were playing in parks and playgrounds. Now they’re holed up at home in front of the TV and iPad. People who do not indulge in enough exercise burn fewer calories as compared to those who are active. Consuming excessive food without indulging in physical activity often leads to obesity. an increase in exposure to technology goes hand in hand with a decrease in physical activity. Therefore, it is clearly obvious that improvement of living standard comes the problem of obesity.
Apart from that, obesity also can be caused by the improper diet. Obesity doesn’t happen overnight. It develops gradually over time as a result of poor diet and lifestyle choices. Malaysia have good reputation as a food paradise. Due to the different culture and races in Malaysia, there are a wide variety of traditional cuisine. For instance, nasi lemak char kwey tiao, roti canai and so on. All these food contain an extremely high calories. The average physically active man needs about 2,500 calories a day to maintain a healthy weight, and the average physically active woman needs about 2,000 calories a day. This amount of calories may sound high, but it can be easy to reach if you eat certain types of food. For example , eating a plate of nasi lemak, ayam rendang crispy and a cup ais kacang can total 1500 calories and that is just one meal. Accordingly, the excess fat turn into fat and cause obesity among Malaysian. Indeed, improper diet may lead to obesity.
Now let us move our topic to the effect of obesity. People who are overweight or obese have a much greater risk of developing serious conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, breathing problem even cancer. This is in light of fact that atherosclerosis is present 10 times more often in obese people compared to those who are not obese. Coronary artery disease is also more prevalent because fatty deposits build up in arteries that supply the heart. Narrowed arteries and reduced blood flow to the heart can cause chest pain or a heart attack. Blood clots can also form in narrowed arteries and cause a stroke. Beside obese people have higher risk to get diabetes. Obesity can cause resistance to insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. When obesity causes insulin resistance, the blood sugar becomes elevated. Even moderate obesity dramatically increases the risk of diabetes. In short obesity may lead to a lot of health disease.
All in all, obesity may not seem like a crucial disease like cancer, but it is as deadly as any diseases out there. Obesity can increase a person’s risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, breathing problems, and even cancer. It is important to take note of the causes of obesity and recognize them so that being obese will not be the next common disease. Having a healthy diet, going outdoors and staying active, changing the portion size and mindless eating habits, and starting a new healthy lifestyle can not only prevent you from being obese but also reduce your risk to other sickness and disease as well as creating a healthier body for a better life.
